Rodriguez (Sugar Man)

Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas
And I talked to Jesus at the sewer
And the Pope said it was none of his God-damned business
While the rain drank champagne
My Estonian Archangel came and got me wasted
Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted
Oh but they'll take their bonus pay to Molly McDonald,
Neon ladies, beauty is that which obeys, is bought or borrowed
Cause my heart's become a crooked hotel full of rumours
But it's I who pays the rent for these fingered-face out-of-tuners
and I make 16 solid half hour friendships every evening
Cause your queen of hearts who is half a stone
And likes to laugh alone is always threatening you with leaving
Oh but they play those token games on Willy Thompson
And give a medal to replace the son of Mrs. Annie Johnson
Cause they told me everybody's got to pay their dues
And I explained that I had overpaid them
So overdued I went to the company store
and the clerk there said that they had just been invaded
So I set sail in a teardrop and escaped beneath the doorsill
Cause the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still
Cause I see my people trying to drown the sun
In weekends of whiskey sours
Cause how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?

HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE !!!

Aprendimos a quererte
desde la histórica altura
donde el sol de tu bravura
le puso cerco a la muerte.
Aquí se queda la clara,
la entrañable transparencia,
de tu querida presencia
Comandante Che Guevara.
Tu mano gloriosa y fuerte
sobre la historia dispara
cuando todo Santa Clara
se despierta para verte.
Vienes quemando la brisa
con soles de primavera
para plantar la bandera
con la luz de tu sonrisa.
Tu amor revolucionario
te conduce a nueva empresa
donde esperan la firmeza
de tu brazo libertario.
Seguiremos adelante
como junto a ti seguimos
y con Fidel te decimos:
!Hasta siempre, Comandante!

Το βιβλίο του Ντέιβιντ Χόροβιτς The Free World Colossus: A Critique of American Foreign Policy in the Cold War κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα με την έκδοσή του στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.

Οι δύο αυτές ταυτόχρονες εκδόσεις συνιστούν τις μοναδικές εμφανίσεις του πολυσχιδούς έργου του Χόροβιτς στα ελληνικά. Δεν πρόκειται για παραδοξότητα αλλά για προϊόν αμηχανίας έναντι της μεταμόρφωσης του ανατόμου του αμερικάνικου ιμπεριαλισμού σε διαπρύσιο υπερασπιστή του. Ο Ντέιβιντ Χόροβιτς, ο επισκέπτης της καστρικής Κούβας, στην οποία αναζητούσε ένα υπόδειγμα κοινωνικής οργάνωσης μακριά από τα γραφειοκρατικά καθεστώτα της Ανατολής, και μετέπειτα συνοδοιπόρος των Μαύρων Πανθήρων, από τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’80 έχει αναδειχθεί σε ιθύνοντα νου ενός εκτεταμένου δικτύου ιδεολογικού και πολιτικού ακτιβισμού του Αμερικανικού νεοσυντηρητισμού. Ανάμεσα στις δραστηριότητες του Horowitz Freedom Center, του βασικού παρατηρητηρίου που έχει οργανώσει ο ίδιος, ξεχωρίζει η διαδικτυακή βάση δεδομένων Discover the Networks: a guide to the political Left (www.discoverthenetworks.org), που καταγράφει τις ποικίλες εκφάνσεις του πολιτικού ριζοσπαστισμού προκειμένου να καταπολεμήσει την «επιρροή [της αριστεράς] στην κοινή γνώμη» – ποιός αλήθεια είναι καταλληλότερος για κάτι τέτοιο;

Michael Hudson: Thatcher's Legacy of Failed Privatizations

By Michael Hudson, a research professor of Economics at University of Missouri, Kansas City, and a research associate at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. His latest book is “The Bubble and Beyond.”
As in Chile, privatization in Britain was a victory for Chicago monetarism. This time it was implemented democratically. In fact, voters endorsed Margaret Thatcher’s selloff of public industries so strongly that by 1991, when she was replaced as prime minister by her own party’s John Major, only 35 percent of Britain’s voters supported the Labour Party – half the proportion registered in 1945. The Conservatives sold off public monopolies, used the proceeds to cut taxes, and put the privatized firms on a profit-making basis. Their stock prices rose sharply, making capital gains for investors whose ranks included millions of Britons who had been employees and/or customers of these enterprises.
Yet by 1997 the Conservatives were voted out of office by one of the largest margins in their history. What concerned voters were the results of privatization that Mrs. Thatcher had not warned them about. Prices did not decline proportionally to cost cuts and productivity gains. Many services were cut back, especially on the least utilized transport routes. The largest privatized bus company was charged with cut-throat monopoly practices. The water system broke down, while consumer charges leapt. Electricity prices were shifted against residential consumers in favor of large industrial users. Economic inequality widened as the industrial labor force shrunk by two million from 1979 to 1997, while wages stagnated in the face of soaring profits for the privatized companies. The tax cuts financed by their selloff turned out to benefit mainly the rich.

Why an H&M T-Shirt costs only 4,95 Euro?

Wolfgang Uchatius asks in this week’s DIE ZEIT, how an H&M T-Shirt can cost only 4,95 Euro (the exact same price as 10 years ago). In his long and well-researched article he follows the path of an H&M T-Shirt – a little bit like Rivoli’s “Travels of a T-Shirt”, but only on 3 pages. Uchatius discovers at least 7 secrets of the cheap H&M T-Shirt:
1. Cheap cotton: In the past years, the 400 g of cotton that you need for one T-Shirt cost around 0,40 Euro. US cotton is cheap, because the cotton stripping machines yield as much cotton a day as 300 workers, and because US-American taxpayers subsidize it by 40 Cents a shirt. Hence, machines and US taxpayers make our H&M T-Shirt cheap. However, Uchatius explains that the cotton price has been rising to 1 Euro for 400 g, because there is too little cotton in the world market at the moment.
2. Indecent working conditions: The ability of the workers in Bangladesh to hold back their need to go to the toilet during working hours (he explains the living and working conditions of workers in Bangladesh in some detail). Garment workes in Bangladesh drink little during working hours (in factories that are around 30-40 degrees hot!), because otherwise they need to go to toilet and then they do not manage the strict targets set by the factory management to achieve the low prices H&M pays (....more)

What is work? (by Bernard Russel)

First of all: what is work? Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to what orders should be given. Usually two opposite kinds of advice are given simultaneously by two organized bodies of men; this is called politics. The skill required for this kind of work is not knowledge of the subjects as to which advice is given, but knowledge of the art of persuasive speaking and writing, i.e. of advertising (In praise of Idleness).

The Known Universe

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world's most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010 (from the American Museum of Natural History).
